Cloud Shadows

This picture was taken from 35,000 feet aboard Southwest Airlines. I was struck by how digital the clouds and their shadows looked. To enhance the look, I used the following procedure. First I applied a gaussian blur with radius 3 to help cut down on noise. Then I grabbed a representative pixel color using the eyedropper tool from the closest shadow and used that to flood fill all the shadows. I used the same color for both foreground and background specifically to flatten the picture. Then I did the same thing for the brightest parts of the clouds, followed by the darkest parts of the clouds and finally the brightly illuminated dirt. Finally, I used Thumbsplus to reduce the image to 4 colors, using the most populous method so that the colors were retained. You may toggle between the original picture and the manipulated picture>
