Red Harvester Ant

This is a picture (others available) of a red harvester ant. This species of ant used to be common throughout Texas, but has been displaced in most places by the imported fire ant. Probably related to this is the decline of the horny toad which uses this red harvester and as a food source.

This picture was taken with a Sigma SA-5 with a 105mm macro lens and handheld flash. The frame was cropped to provide an optimal closeup view of this ant. The other pictures in this gallery are full frame (not cropped).
