Straight hair is a wonderful thing. I used to hate mine, but it has grown down to my waist and I've learned to love it. But if you really decide you don't like it, you might think about a perm. There are many different kinds, and some that will put in very large curls, or waves, that won't make it unreasonably curly. Keep in mind, however, that any sort of treated hair needs more special treatment than natural hair, so get used to it.
As far as non-permanent feminine hairstyles, I would suggest learning to braid your hair hair for a generally acceptable look. If you really want to look drastically feminine, hair accessories such as barrettes, bows, and large clips are still almost strictly worn by the female gender.
A 3-strand or french braid is relatively easy to learn; more complicated ones take more dedication. I am starting a hair page, with instructions for the more complex patterns. I'll be working on it for a while, and pictures will be there soon. I've done my own hair for over 10 years, so I can likely give you help if you are confused with anything.

I thought I was the only person who used Suave--on
most of the longhair sites people recommend Aveda.
But Suave works for me--I especially like the peach-scent
conditioner. Thanks for the info about drying time
for your hair. My hair is only shoulder length as
of today, 97.08.05, and drying time is similar to yours
based on the same variables. Your hair is longer than
mine, so guess I won't have to worry about drying time
for a while. I look forward to seeing your picture(s)

A bit more indication of what you want would help, but I have posted three pics of styles with varying degrees of movement/curls for your comments.
I agree with Barabra though - there is nothing wrong with straight hair, especially if you get the cut right, but do you just want more flexibility in styling and do you want to wear a more feminine style all the time or just on some occassions, do you want to try braids (as Barabra suggested) or other up-dos - perhaps with your hair curled on top.
If you want your hair much curlier, or curly all the time then a perm would be a good choice, but if you only want a temporary effect then you would need to consider setting your hair on rollers.
Let us know what you think and would like and we may be able to help some more.

the first style of Meg Ryan showed that even straight hair can have lots of volume. This style has much more wave.

I like this style very much. Especially the color. It's a bit lighter than my color. Having it more curly would be a nice idea to try.I wear my hair in a ponytail most of the time so it's getting a little bit thin on the top. Do you think I could still get this volume?

Before getting a perm, try something else simple that is less permanent. All hair has a normal bias. By this I mean that the hair emerges from the skin at a certain angle and direction.
After washing your hair, brush it in the opposite direction from its natural direction. Dry it while brushing backwards this way. You may want to apply a little mousse. This will help your hair to stand up, giving it extra volume.

the second style had more volume and a bit of wave, but was still essentially straight - this third style has more curl to it. Which do you prefer, or do you want curlier still (someone (Tim I think) posted a good one of Meg Ryan with long curly hair before and that is still lower down on this board I think).
