Hats: Fact or Myth?

I've always heard that wearing hats can increase your chances of going bald at an early age.
Is there any validity to that statment?
My guess is "no" - bald people wear hats to cover their bald heads!

Speaking of hair loss, if you constantly wear your hair in a hairstyle that puts tension on the hair (e.g. a tight ponytail [that is, most ponytails]), after a while you get a medical condition (with a name that I forgot) that promotes hair loss.
I found the info somewhere on ebody.com, look in their hair care q&a and related sections to find the name of the condition and more details.

Hello everyone,
I have worked for 9 years as a bike messenger, meaning wearing a helmet everyday, and in winter wearing a hat to prevent my ears from freezing. I have near-waist length hair, which I had since 1979, and in my courier days (1988 to 1997) I tucked my hair under a baseball cap to prevent the wind from blowing it in my face, however I did not tie it tightly, and I wore a bike helmet on top of that. Today at 41, no sign of balding, except some receding in the front, that is hardly visible, and attributed to age.
I would simply say, that if you are destined to go bald, you will. I also remember as a kid, my barber telling me that long hair on men causes baldness. That was in 1968, when I was 9, and long hair was starting in Montreal. It was common for people who hated long hair (or was jealous) to say that baldness is linked to having long hair.
I would presume, that if the hat is so tight that circulation is blocked, it may not be too good.
