Longhaired doctor with ponytail

My hair is growing, so I've tied it in a ponytail during the service in the Hospital (I'm a medical doctor).
Till now I had few comments and they were not at all negative.
My boss has not yet made any comment.
What matters to my patients is how I heal them, not how long is my hair.I hope that my boss agrees.

I think I would prefer a longhair male doctor. I once had an MD tell me that the weight of my long hair, and my wearing a ponytail (not a particularly tight one) would make my hair fall out. So much for sage medical advice about hair, from shorthairs.

The other day I took my son to the E.R. when we thought he broke his wrist and was bruised up from a bike accident. While we were waiting I saw this fellow in hospital scrubs moving in and out, confident, strong, efficient looking. Poking out of the standard issue baby blue hair/head cap was this profusion of dreadlocks draped accross his head, gathered and tied back with a few strands from either side, at the nape of his neck and hanging half way down his back. I was pretty impressed with his mighty crop and the hefty growth of locs. I didn't know who he was but but you could see that his locs were very well tended and his whole demeanor bespoke a professional manner. Then, after the nurse finally examined my son, she brought in this same guy and he introduced him as Doctor Robertson!!! He greeted us, beamed a smile at us from behind his moustache and goatee and proceeded to examine Charlie with a confidence and thoroughness I have rarely seen in the medical world, especially the ER. You are right, its how you heal them not how you grow your hair. But an impressive mane is a definite plus!!

I like ponytails. A doctor with a ponytail I could ask more about hair care then about my illness. Beautiful long hair in my eyes is a sign of health and patience. I think it really needs more people like you, to give long hair a better image in society.

I, too, am a longhaired physician. I have admired long hair for a long time and about 2 years ago decided to painstakingly let it grow while keeping it extremely neat and "professional". It is now long enough to tie back into about a 7 inch ponytail or I wear it loose down all over. My hair is about 10-11 inches long all over. I am amazed that patients have almost always said positive things or nothing at all- occasionally they may say something like going back to the 60's??? and what the hell is wrong with that???? I am sure there are other docs out there- don't be hung up like I was- do not wait too long - you may not have enough hair left if you do! JL
