3 Questions w/Hair Growth
Posted by Frank on November 05, 2000 at 05:41:06: Previous Next
I've been trying to grow my hair out, and am in the early stages (2 months to be exact). What I want to know is:
--Would constant tinkering (i.e. running hands through, etc.) with the hair during the day cause potential long hair to fall out?
--I got extremely curly hair. On the back of my head it is curly more upwards. What do you suggest to mat it down? I hope to get a ponytail some day, but this looks awkward at this point...
--When does the "period of hell" usually end?

Yes, but not in huge amounts. I run my hands through all the time. It didn't hurt it any :)

It depends on how curly (meaning I can only tell you my experience). I've got wavy curly hair. I've found Conair's Straight Styles hair iron to work the best. It is time consuming, but worth it, if you want straighter hair. Also, once you get it in a ponytail, your curls won't be as pronounced. Hairspray also works for me, but it might not be the healthiest thing for hair. Someone else might have to comment.

It took about six months for me. Hang in there :)

Not unless you are yanking it out - but be aware that playing with curly hair makes it frizz, it's better not to touch it. I just wash mine, comb it while coated with conditioner, then rinse it straight down under the shower, shake it a little, wrap gently and briefly in a towel, then carefully unwind and squeeze on a tiny bit of leave-in conditioner. Then I leave it alone.

Sorry dude, but what you need is length and weight of the hair itself to draw it down, it takes time. I knew a guy in college who put a ski cap on his head while his hair dried to keep it flat - it worked pretty well but it took a while. Maybe you can hide bobby pins in among the curls to pin the sproingiest pieces down. Or you could just wear a cap whenever possible. This is where a case of "hat head" is not such a bad thing!

Depends on how short your hair was to begin with, and curly hair takes longer to show length (sorry, that's just the way it is). I've been growing for a year and the top layer is still a little poofy on some days. Using a leave-in conditioner helps keep it droopier.
