The Wrong Hair Type

My main question is that i would like to grow my hair a little longer, but it only gets thicker, not longer. My hair is coarse and thick with a natural wave, which i hate, and the longer it grows the thicker, wavier and more dirty looking it gets. I even get the "ear flaps" on the sides. I was wondering if there was a low cost product, treatment, or way, i could get my hair straighter, finer, and a bit more manageable. I take forever combing my hair in the morning, just to step outside and get it blown away by the smallest breeze. Its just a complete frizz then. I am in university, so i don't have much $$ to spend, but i would like to have the style i want, atleast once in my life. I show the hairstylists that i go to, the very style that i want, they try, but it always turns out the same.
Thank You.

My friend has a similar problem and she solved it by buying and using FRIZZ EASE. It's really cheap...i think you can buy that at Kmart for only five bucks or so. It's worth checking.
