Pulling on hair for growth?

Someone once told me that if you gently pull on your hair,it will grow faster. Is this true? Does it damage your hair?
Another way to grow hair faster is with Skin, Hair, and Nails by Natrol. I've tried this and I definately had to shave more often, and my hair did grow somewhat faster.
Yet another "urban legend..."

Wow! I can't imagine any plausible way pulling on your hair could encourage the buds in your follicles to undergo mitosis faster or in any other way make more hair faster. All I see it doing is stressing the hair, just possibly to the point of increasing its likelihood of breakage. (Or even pulling it right out of the follicle.)
However, I can definitely see how improving your nutrition could improve your hair growth. Vitamin supplements -- including those presumably designed for helping keratin-producing tissue specifically -- can very plausibly help.

I will see if I can dig up a post from the email list for The Long Hair Site, where this was mentioned. Someone had printed up a flier with things to do to encourage hair to grow longer and to keep it in good condition. Among the things mentioned was to pull on the hair. A theoretical explanation was also given.
If I recall, an analogy was made to scars, callouses, etc., where direct stimulation unequivically stimulates growth. This is common not only in the animal kingdom, but in the plant kingdom as well.
Those who have tried their hand at growing greenhouse plants know that they are usually weaker than plants grown outdoors, exposed to the elements. Believe it or not, a technique to build the strength of greenhouse plants is to buffet them about.
It has also been a practise at times to beat fruit trees to stimulate them into growth. I'm not as familiar with this, though.
If I find the post to which I alluded, I will post it here as a followup.

Pulling on the scalp gently can increase blood flow to the region, possibly stimulating more growth. A nice scalp massage might be betther.
