My Mullet: A Precautionary Tale

I've been growing my hair out since the beginning of October. I'm not looking to get it to ponytail length, just long enough to see it poking out behind my ears from the front view--something that I've never managed before.
I let it go for three months--a long time for me--and realized that I had a lot of fullness in back and on the sides, but not a lot of length in back. I finally went to my barber and we agreed to leave the length, but get rid of some of the bulk, in hopes of getting it all to grow out evenly. He did exactly what we discussed, and now...
Well, it now looks suspiciously like, um, a mullet. In fact, the only thing that keeps it from being one is that it's still not long enough in back to stick out at the corners--something for which I'm now grateful.Saturday, when I got my haircut, I was mortified. Now, it's not looking so bad--I'm certainly capable of staying calm for a month or two and seeing what happens when it all gets long again. But . . .
If you're in the awkward stage and tempted to get a maintenance cut, I'd advise against it. Better to tough it out a little while longer. Or, at least, tell the barber just to layer what you've got without taking length or bulk.
