Hair Spray & Curly Hair

Hi Everyone,
I'm in my 4th month of hair growth, and I'm doing OK. I know my hair is not the underlying reason for, but I've been more outgoing and have been with the female population since!!! Anyone who says growing hair doesn't help doesn't know their @ss from their elbow.
Anyhow, I' am getting one nasty problem though... Since I have not been able yet to tie my hair into a ponytail, and my hair is super curly, I have been using massive amounts of hair spray. Pretty much, it gives me the look I want. I kinda poof out the hair on the sides, anda little bit on the front near the forehead. The problem is with the hair spray after it dries...
Tonight when I was combing my hair, I had endless amounts oh hair sprar dust flying in every direction. This is gross. I can't even get rid of it all, there's so friggin much.
Do I need to dump hair spray altogether, or should I wash my hair in the morning for an extra long time. I have had limited success with hair straighteners, and I avoid gel because I believe it causes me to break out (I'm 20 years old). I wish to continue using hair spray, but I know its not healthy.
Please, I need some advice!!!!!

Frank

You need to change hair products for sure. Try a good gel or an extra-hold mousse. I used to use Finesse Moisurizing Mousse, which held well and helped prevent dryness.

Thanks y'all for your input. I might give a gel a whirl. Just be sure to keep it away from my forehead!!! Moose sounds OK, but I'm afraid it will give my hair too much volume as a result.
Is American Crew that thick pink stuff? (I claim ignorance on this)

Curly, dry,or frizzy hair can be a bitch to grow long. You will have a horrendous akward stage. Mind if i suggest some strategies?
1. Dreadlocks. You might think you are "too old" for these. They are not dirty or nasty, nor do they smell. Ive found quite a few sites that tell exactly how to do them and make it clean, sanitary, and painless. They actually lock Faster the "worse" your hair is. And there is no akward stage. Gone are the days of disgusting unwashed dreads, these take 7 8 9 months to lock, if u dont comb or wash it EVER! 2.Braids. Doesnt need to be very long to start these. Once again not dirty or smelly and your hair wont be long enough to get too bad before you can do braids. Can undo and redo as you wish in different styles or if you decide it sucks you can go back to number 3 With these 2 theirs gonna be some maintenance, although not much more than trying to get long curly hair decent looking with gels mousse, etc every morning. Also an undercut works well here. 3. Just leave it alone. Conditioner if its dry but if not let it turn into a big lump of curly hair it can look cool =) also u can always dread or braid it and if you want undercut it later. Woudlnt it be nice to get up in the morning and not have to screw with it period?

Frank, try using American Crew grooming products--none of their sprays or gels flake at all when they dry.
