Hair Style question

HI
I am growing my hair long, Its all equal length to 1 inch at the moment, it was about 3 inches all same length, but i got it cut down a bit for an interview i had recently, I was growing it to put into a ponytail,
Before my recent cut of last week, it was mid august that i had my hair cut it was graded to 6mm, so it grow 2.75 inches in 4 and half months. My hair I straight meduim thickness.
My question is-
When it gets to about 2 inches, I want to get the side and back cut short until the top gets to about 4 ins, then leave it to grow out,
I want to know if i should have the hair faded into from bottom to top the with shaver, or to have the sides cut a bit like an undercut and the top about 2 inches, and keep getting the sides and back cut short until it the top gets to about 4 inches and then leave all my hair to grow out,
or do you have a better idea, I think it might look neater, and more gradual change + I want the top to catch up with the hair at the back when I put it into a pony tail. (I have Allowed for two inch to took into the ponytail) It takes about 11 inches for the side to took into the pony tail and 14 inches for the top, centre parted style, and i guess the hair would be at that time 10 or 11 inches at the back.

My advice is:
Do not touch your hair until it can be tied into a ponytail
