We saw the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" last week. It's a period Chinese martial arts derivation with great action sequences and beautiful photography. Anyway, all the Han Chinese men wear a terminal length braid (queue) down to the waist, butt, or knees at back but their heads are completely shaved in front to the line that goes from one ear to the other across the top of the head. The movie has two male heroes, Chow Yun Fat who plays Li Mu Bai who is the good/good guy and who has the above-mentioned hairstyle; and Chang Chen who plays Lo, the good/bad guy who leads a group of desert nomad bandits, and who has plain loose long hair all over his head.

The long braids all look quite realistic close up with the hairs having the individual hairs having the complete range of lengths as shown by the ends sticking slightly out between the strands of the braids.
