Before i delve into my problem, i'll give you a bit of backgorund to it. Please take time to read my story.
I've been growing my hair out for several months now as i decided that it would look really great. All was going well until a few months ago when i noticed that it was curling up at the back, making me look like an idiot with straight hair and a big curl at the back, by my neck. So, i got my mother to cut about an inch from the back and all was OK again. I then began to take more interest in long hair and i found this board. I read several people say that you shouldn't have such "maintenance cuts", but instead wait until it's ponytail length then cut it all one length when the hair is long enough. I decided to take this advice and not cut it again. However, this curling up at the back has appeared again, even worse than last time as it's longer now. Should i get it cut at the back. I mean, people are starting to call me "mullet-man" at college, so what's wrong with maintenance cuts? Will maintenance cuts hinder me in the long run? And most importantly, what is the best way to control this curling up at the back?
I really apreciate it for everyone who replies as i'm really desperate and may be forced to have it cut soon.

I am having this EXACT same problem with the big curl thing. I havent done anything to aid in trying to let it lay down. I've been thinking about a maintenance cut as well, because I grew it out from a nearly uniform length and the front isnt all that long. But I think I'm going to wait until my bangs get longer to cut it.

Think about this a minute...your hair does something weird when it gets to a certain length, so if you cut it off, eventually it will get to be that length again and do the same weird thing. You are just prolonging the inevitable. eventually you have to tough it out and let it go or you'll never get any length on it. I have to admit I got a couple of shape up trims in the initial 6 months of my grow out, but just hacking off the offending length won't make you look any better, or make your hair not curl up when it gets to that particular length again. Follow that two week rule, where you have to want a haircut for TWO SOLID WEEKS WITH NO WAVERING THOUGHTS AT ALL before you even make the appointment..chances are by that time your hair will have an extra 1/4 inch and will be behaving better.

Hey, mine's curling up at the back, too, but probably doesn't look as "horrible" because I have curling elsewhere. My brother gave me a cap for Christmas that says "USS San Francisco" on the front and it was great. I stick it on my head when I go out and I just look a little redneckish, which is OK because the illusion is shattered when I open my mouth. I'd suggest a cap!
