i have long hair, wavy, was tangle prone, and i was losing hair till i started using water only washing...its a lot less hair going down the drain now, hair is more manageable, not greasy at all...no conditioning needed because the shampoo was stripping all my natural oils away and the alcohol in the conditioners was actually giving me dry scalp....i ask my physician about not using shampoo and he said our ancesters did it for yrs,and its a great idea....any comments? anyone else try this?

Micky: My personal feeling is that we North Americans are hyper-hygienic, and cutting back on the amount and frequency of shampooing would be a good move for many of us. I'm not sure I'd agree, however, that you *never* need to use shampoo. I'm not even thinking of your hair as much as I am the scalp. Sebum and natural oils can accumulate under your hair, and the detergent action of a good shampoo may be needed to lift the goop and liquify it so that it will rinse away. A good shampoo will not cause or accelerate hair loss that wouldn't occur otherwise. If you were losing hair before, you're still losing it; it just may be on your pillow rather than in the drain. Good luck.

Some guys do only wash in water, but many more intermix mild "wash in water" techniques with a more harsh but cleansing regimen of shamooing to get a bit of the benefits of both.
"Wash in water" techniques are also handy for any longhair to know. When traveling or on long hiking trips, one may have to do without those favorite hair care products for a bit.
The main thing to keep in mind when washing in water is that, since you aren't adding any conditioner, you don't want to wash out all the existing conditioner, be it yesterday's hair care product or natural oils. If you do, you will leave your hair very dry. This is not a problem of course if you have very oily hair, but most people do not, and daily shampooing can be a bit much for the meager supply of oil that their scalp provides. That is why, in a survey done on here once, we learned most longhairs shampoo only two to three times a week, and if they wash at all in between, it is just with water.
Washing with water can also often be viewed more as a grooming activity than a cleansing. Often only a small quantity of water is used. Who hasn't moistened their hair to quickly smooth it down?
If you wash in water all the time, the goal is to wash the scalp and let the water move its oil down into the hair while washing older oil in your ends out of your hair and down the drain. This requires you pay particular attention to just how much water you are putting on your hair, and how cool it is. Enough water to just make combing easy is usually the right amount.

Ivory soap, despite it's claim to be "99 44/100 percent pure" is incredibly harsh and drying stuff. Look for a nice gentle shampoo instead, man, your hair will thank you.
