Long Hair Beginner
Posted by Dustin on February 05, 2001 at 18:54:14: Previous Next
Hello
My name is Dustin, 15, and short hair, well about one inch
on sides, 1.5-2 on the top. I decided I really want to
grow out my hair, since I think my culture is more of that type
than short hair (basicly a hippie born 40 years late, guitar, music, idealism)
I am worried of my family-since they are all short hairs, and completely one culture, like rap or heavy metal. My question is, what are some good tips to make it look nice, and is there anything I can do to prepare for this long journey that lays before me? I by no means want to look like a gap boy with long hair-the clothes go to...
Thankyou,
Dustin

I read you loud and clear, I'm a hippie born 40 years late as well. Heavy metal people wont rip on the hair, they'll think it's cool. I personally get along great with metal-heads. People into rap though, that's a different story. That whole rap-culture perplexes me, I dont understand it at all. I get probs from them all the time about my hair which is just entering the awkward stage now. My parents are both classical musicians and look down at long hair, they force me to hack it off every 3-6 months. My advice? Get a SLIGHT trim cut in a couple months to clean it up. It makes a difference, I got a clean-up cut this on Friday and mom is much happier with my hair. I can probably get away with more time before the inevitable hack job comes my way. I hope you have better luck than I have in that department.

I can completely understand, I have no idea how you can find rap appealing it is not a band-just someone talking fast to a synth. And boy bands? Come on! I mean thats not evan a band. My brother will most likely be pissed at me for it, but he's outta here in 5 months so oh well. My mom won't be surprised lol. I'm about 1.5 months into it now, I'm alittle worried about this awkward stage, sure I can handle it, with my life I can take anything just about, but I'm really excited about it. Thanks for your pointer.

Took a few hours to read through all the posts on the site
incredible. Not sure if my previous message posted, but I too
cannot comprehend how people like rap, but I suppose it is a culture.
I'm just so excited about doing it, its almost dominating my thoughts
one more day down, about a year and a half to go ;o)

Just do one thing, and that is, to make sure that no one in your family decides to "clean" it up a bit. Had this happen on Sunday. GAAAAH!!! Big mistake. Whereas I had about an 8-10" ponytail beforehand, I now have almost nothing. Maybe a 2" stub. It also no longer is one length, so life kinda sucks right now. Trying the Biotin 600 health supplement from GNC, and will report back with results. Hope to have some hair back by June (my hair typically grows a little faster than most people - about 3/4"-1" a month, so with the Biotin, it may be more like 1.5" a month or so)...

I haven't tried the Hair, Skin, and Nails product, but I think one of the ingredients is Biotin, which is what causes the hair and your nails to grow faster. BTW: did a little bit of measurement and my hair is actually between 2.5" at the top where it was layered and 4" at the bottom, so I may be a little quicker in getting enough hair to pull back. Just hoping to have this nightmare end soon... I could've killed my sister for what she did to me last Sunday. To tell the truth, I've decided to take a break from talking with her.

Good idea, I still haven't told any of my family I'm going to grow
it out, but they'll figure it out soon. My hair is still pretty short, I can't believe your sister would do such a thing, thats so
mean. As soon as I get money, I'll sample 'em both I think, I just want to loose the akward stage as fast as possable, and hoping I can get my hair as long as it is in the pic (in a previous post of mine)
by next january.

Ah, ok... Yeah, that looks pretty good... I'm planning to go at least that long, but wear it pulled back. I prefer to wear it that way. Doesn't make me so hot. The reason why she did it was partly due to a gross error on the part of the person who had been cutting my hair normally. That person thought I wanted a mullet and cut the top and sides very short, but then left the back long. Gave me a nice ridge on top of my head that made me look like I was losing my hair. Started wearing a baseball cap with the ponytail coming out the hole in the back, just so I would look civilized. Suffered with that for a year and started growing the top out so it would possibly meet up with the long hair at the ponytail and have it look how I've wanted it to be. Oh well. At least, now I will have it done correctly and won't be looking like a disaster.
