Long Hair and Baldness
Posted by Frank on February 06, 2001 at 23:24:10: Previous Next
I'm been growing my hair for several months now. Now, I don't know if this is true or not, but when I talked to my mother earlier tonight, she stated that growing hair causes baldness around the collack area if grown for extensive period of time. I'm only 20; the thought of going bald would kill me, but my dad's side of the family does show baldness?
Could my mother being using a scare tactic on me (because she thinks my hair looks like crappy in this stage), or could there be any validity to this? Genetics aside, is this something that occurs with the male long hair population over time? Please let me know this is all a crock of crap....

growing long hair does not precipitate baldness. whether your mom is relating a myth she sincerely believes or is trying to scare you to the barbershop i cannot say. your hair will most likely follow the course of the parent whose hair it most resembles... that is, if it is the same color/texture of your moms, look to her brothers for a glimpse into your future- if it's like your dad's, then there's a good chance you'll follow his course of hair loss.

Hello,
I think this statement is nonsense (although I don't know what a collack is, dictionary refuses help). I have grown my hair three times in my life from very short to longer then shoulder length and it hasn't caused any baldness. Now I am 47 and the hair is still growing. It is not so full as in my 20th, but I remember that my father at my age had already lost most of his hair. (My grandfather from my mother site had full hair until the age of 80).
Nevertheless, hair loss can appear at any age, if something like this would happen to you the Rogaine stuff could help, or hair vitamins, hair skin and nails and suitable food. In this case I would consult a doctor. Hair loss doesn't depend from the length of the hair, it comes from the roots and if you look around you can see that male pattern baldness occurs on long haired and short haired humen, I think the distribution is statistically.

Here's help:
A cowlick (so named because it looks like a cow licked your head there) is the place, also known as the vertex or whirl, where hair goes around in a circle.
