Growing Thick Hair
Posted by Mark on February 17, 2001 at 00:43:29: Previous Next
Hey everyone! I have tried my hair just about every style you can think of...including bald....but have never grown it long. I am just starting out, as my hair is only about 2 inches on top, and an inch on the sides. My hair is EXTREMELY thick...what can I expect to happen in the next few months? Since my hair is thick, will it look okay if I grow it out? And are there any suggestions on styles?
Thanks a bunch!
Mark

I can't give a lot of advise about thick hair, since my hair is on the finer, thinner side, but I can say that you are one of the lucky few who can grow your hair really long and look fabulous that way. Hair tends to thin out as it lengthens, so the thick hair people are the ones we all admire.
You can slick it down and back some during this period, but I suggest being ready to put up with an awkward month or two as it gets between ear and chin-length. Do check sites like Hair Boutique for good advise on conditioning it as it grows out, because the hair growing out of your head now is still going to be there a couple of years from now. If you don't take care of it now, the ends will look crummy later.

Hey, thanks for the tip! I am excited to see what it looks like...and nervous about the "awkward" stage. But thanks for the info.

Growing thick hair? Expect a savage afro. Then expect long, kickass curls.

THANK YOU!
My hair is thick too and I was getting fed up and thinking it would never grow and now I have hope!
Isn't it amazing that after 10 cups of coffee the tiniest thing will make you happy for hours?

My hair is thick and a little wavy, and if you're hair is like mine then you're going to go thru torment for about 7 months. But once u're able to tie in ponytail then it get much easier. JUST HANG IN THERE! Wear a cap, gel, or apply motor grease if u have to (joke), just don't cut it.
But everyone is right, the thick hair usually thins out a bit when it gets longer, the waves comes out a bit too. It will look and feel amazing. While I was in the awkward phase, I wished I had perfectly straight hair but now that it's almost shoulder length it looks great. Straight hair now almost seems boring in comparison.
