coarse hair help!!
Posted by Andrew on February 23, 2001 at 13:04:54: Previous Next
I am a 21 year old while male with EXTREMELY coarse hair. Last night I shaved it off (not the first time) because I was so fed up with it. Now I want to grow it and give it another go.
My main question is: is there any product out there that can seriously soften up my hair? It's just so stiff it makes styling absolutely impossible. I really need help here.
My hair is relatively fine--that is to say each hair is thin, but there is a while lot of it. I also have a big cowlick in the front. Now I actually don't mind that so much, cause i want to go for the messy look, if I can, but because it's so coarse it just becomes this stiff mess. I used to use heavy pomade--but I want to get away from that.
Well...there's my problem. PLEASE help!!

Whats your target length? Whether you want 2 inches or 2 feet makes a big difference on what product you should use

I'm not certain how long yet. Probably between 3 and 5 inches. At least in the beginning I especially want to make the whole awkward stage easier, and i think it would be if my hair was softer and so more manageable.
Thanks!

What are your complaints with pomade?

Well, I've been thinking about trying out some nicer brands of pomade (i've always used the cheap stuff--it's great for a greased up pompadour). The stuff I've used just leaves my hair kinda nasty. I want something a bit more free--more "touchably soft." Plus, even with pomade i'm a bit limited because coarse hair just isn't very responsive. But I'm not opposed to pomade; i just don't want to use so much.

This goes along with the other thread too. I have the same problem with the stuff as you do, it can be gross. I got some Redken Water Wax a long time ago for the ridiculous price of 12.95 for 1.7 oz. It is water based instead of nasty petroleum, works very similar, for spiking at least, I never tried it for softening, smells good like normal non-ethnic hair products, and is not greasy. However, for under 2 bucks I can get 4 oz of Beeswax, kinda greasy, smells ethnic but not too bad. The price per ounce works out to Redken being MORE THAN 15 times as expensive. I can't afford it.
As for the greasiness Im still working out the bugs on that one, as I am new to using wax for this purpose. When im using it to soften up and make it look nice and touchably soft, I put in small amounts BEFORE I shower, sometimes when its still dry and sometimes I wet it down first, I'm still figuring out which is better, then condition only. If you leave the conditioner in for awhile and rub it around real good, when you rinse out it really dilutes, disperses, and softens up the wax. Also the warm water of the shower helps soften. Then I always put more conditioner in and leave it in
To sum this whole thing up, I shampoo when dirty/greasy, and I always make sure I have a little wax and conditioner in my hair
This sounds like it takes awhile but it doesn't. Get in the shower, wax and massage if you need to, shampoo and rinse if you need to, put conditioner in and massage to disperse the wax, start washing body below neck, after a few minutes soap and rinse face and neck, try to keep it out of your hair, then rinse hair keeping it out of your face. Recondition right after you rinse hair for maximum softness. Leave it in. Finish body if your not done, theres no hurry after you put the conditioner in the 2nd time, its fine if it drys a bit before you comb and hat it. You can shave, dress, do what you need to do. All done. I only stress keeping the conditioner out of your face because I have a a tendency toward zits like my mom's side of the family, and conditioner can give you a few zits if you get it all over your face and leave it there. I wipe the skin near my temples and in front of and below my ears with a wet rag to remove any conditioner. The wax doesn't cause zits.
Even easier, just spike the hell out of it =).
Hope I helped.
