Straightening irons - please reply...

I desperately would like to turn my wavy/frizzy hair into the straight variety. Common sense tells me that a straightening iron would be the way to go. Just one question, how long do straightening irons keep your hair straight for before you have to do it all again? Also, do straightening irond cause baldness (such as pulling hair out when they straighten)?
Two questions there - i would be eternally grateful to all those who reply.

i've used them occasionally, they're pretty cool if u're hair is long enough. You can DIY but for the best results, I recommend going to a good hair salon and have a professional do it. They generally have better industrial strenght equipment and know how to use it well - you'd hope anyway.
some salons use the cheapo $30 iron which is not as good (in terms of result and duration).
Done well, i've had the hair last for almost 4-5 days - could go longer if u don't get it wet. But u eventually have to wash your hair ;-)
As far as hair loss, yes, some does get pulled out, but depends on how careful you are (or your hairdresser. I haven't noticed any substantial hair loss due to it, ofcourse, i get it done maybe once every couple of months or so.
i hear u're likely to dry out your hair if overdone, so seek professional advice if u have concerns.

I've been putting this suave frizz control gel in my hair while it's still wet and then blowdrying my hair and it seems to work well for me.

How long it lasts depends on many factors, I think you just have to experiment. Redken and other companies make hair straightening balm which I'd recommend trying. It's intended to be used along with heat to straighten hair (such as with a straightening iron), and protects the hair from heat damage. Even without heat it seems to help control frizzy hair.
