the blackmetal, long hair look
Posted by Marduk on March 13, 2001 at 18:22:25: Previous Next
Hi everyone. I'm 19 and lately I've been wanting to get into the "blackmetal look" because of the music I'm into. For those who don't know what that is, they typically have long black hair(which some ppl find scary), black band shirts, black pants, long wallet chain and spikey collars or guantlets. My hair is growing pretty well and is about 8" now but I would just like to hear some feedback on how you people would react to this look if you knew me, I think that a lot of people probably would view it as negative, not only for the long black hair but also the clothing and "satanic image" that blackmetal heads get. I want to go to tech school next fall and get a good job and i hope this does'nt hinder my goals. My parents don't care actually, but like I said I would like to look like this but I just want to know what people would think so thanks for your feedback, be honest too, thanks. Also I was wondering what shampoos are good because I have no idea which ones are good for long hair. thanks

Since when is a long wallet chain metal? That's more of a mallcore look.
Anyway, keep growing the hair growing! Be a proud metalhead. It shouldn't matter how others view you. The only opinion that truly matters in the end is your own.

Actually, the heavy metal look was the original inspiration for growing out my hair which is now six inches short of waist length. I am twenty three and I can assure you that my hair is one of the greatest pleasures of my life. The confidence that the heavy metal look allows is amazing. I am actually a professional who dresses conservatively while on the job, but in my spare time I am often seen in a black t-shirt, black jeans, and black boots. I don't know about this wallet chain look and black hair. Long blond hair is perfectly amenable to heavy metal.

Yeah, do the words Zakk Wylde mean anything to you? :)

Go for it. In my opinion, that's the coolest look you can get. Have you read the Necronomicon? Just wondering, since your name is Marduk.

I got into that look when I was about 17 or so, mainly due to me being a diehard metalhead. I am now 20 and have hair that is just about past my shoulders. My goal is to get it about to the midback area, sort of like what Samoth from Emperor and Zyklon has at the moment (though not as straight). Maybe more like Astennu....
Anyways, as for the image factor, you have probably already heard this before, but man, do what you feel looks good. My parents have had no trouble with my whole growing the hair out. I am presently in my third year of University and no one here really cares about what my hair looks like. Later on though when you graduate and find a job, some employers don't like the idea of long hair on a man. I had a job once where they told me to cut it, but since it was a stupid summer job, I just quit :)
Now as for the whole Black Metal image, which I wear on occasion, you won't get any hateful stares or remarks about wearing black clothes and boots....well, you shouldn't. I mean, the coat I wear nowadays is a half trench leather jacket thing that makes me look more menacing, and people don't care at all. The only thing I would worry about is any clothing, tattoos and jewelery with any satanic/naziprop/invertedcorsses/evil stuff on them. I don't wear things like this (cept for my Thor's hammer and spike belts), but people may be scared or frightened if you go the full "satanic" image. For instance, you probably shouldn't wear loads of spike stuff and shirts with *inapropriate* logos. You know the ones I'm talking about :)
I generally don't show up to class wearing my Carcass or Darkthrone T-shirt ;)
Sorry for the long answer, I hope this helps somewhat.

Thanks for your input man. Einherjar rules by the way, especially far Far North and Odin Owns Ye All, very cool. So do you practice Asatru/Odinism? The Thors hammer made me think so, I've been considering that religion actually time to time.
Anyway I agree that most people wouldn't find the long black hair/black clothes offensive (of course on the other hand I live in Wisconsin so who knows?:) But I do plan on wearing an inverted cross necklace and also band shirts with curious looking upside down stars on them, um I forget what they are called haha j/k. After all i want to show my colors a bit you know? But as far as people judging me I'm starting to decide that they can think whatever they want and I won't care or let it get to me. But if I ever travel down south to Alabama or something I think for my own safety I'll put something else on for a while hehe.

Yeah i try to find time to practice the pagan religion Asatru. I don't actually live my life by its ways so to speak, but I really find the whole concept interesting. I find most people nowadays, don't really care one way or the other what you look like. Actually I find the rudest people are some of the students at my university. It is kinda wierd actually since I'm the captain of the rugby squad and take an active part in some social things (like organizing battle of the bands where I play in :)
Most people are just ignorent about the whole thing...oh well. People shouldn't mind the whole santanic look that much...just don't go putting on corpsepaint, wearing your Mayhem shirt and bringing fake blood into the local cafe :P You might get asked to leave. As for Alabama, I've never been there, but from what I've heard, it would be a good idea to leave the inverted crosses behind I think....that is, if you value your health :)

He is into black metal, as it seems many others on the board are.
Black metal is a nihilist, even anti-melodic, artform. It is based around Satanism and anti-Christianity. Image is very important.
On the contrary, death metal is a form of music where less emphasis is made of the image, though the majority of bands still wear long hair.

I think I may help shed some knowledge on the mystery of the keychain. The nu-metal/skater scene is fond of baggy pants with keychains. And dyed spikey hair. Haven't the patience to grow it? Can't really blame 'em...
I'm an 18 year-old goth waifboy, so I'm not heavily into black metal, more industrial/goth. I'm a Christian (work that one out) and not into pagan/norse religions or satanism... Some goths are, some goths aren't. It really is that simple. We tend to leave religion down to the individual, rather than encourage anything, due to most goths accepting religion (or lack of it) as a private issue.
But anyway, long hair past your shoulders (nearing the waist) is gooooooooooooooood, if not for me. Not sure about the inverted crosses amongst some folks, since a lot of "Christians" are oh-so tolerant. I wear crosses, but not inverted ones (funnily enough). You don't need to dye your hair black; blond looks cool too. My hair is definately not long, but its longer than what the cattle have, so I guess it qualifies as "long" - covers eyes and ears and (my exceedingly long) nose, the back's tied into an ickle ponytail.
Grow it way, way past your shoulders, that'll look mad. It may (will) take a while, especially if you cut it - don't - but it'll be well worthwhile. Parents can be a problem, but I'm lucky in that mine weren't - my friend had hair like the Crow (it's much longer now) and my Mom told me "Wardy's hair's nice. Why don't you grow your hair like Wardy?" She thinks long hair on blokes (as long as it's clean and tidy) is sexy. Ladies LOVE long hair!
I looked like Brains from Thunderbirds at the time. I've liked metal since I was 8, and turning seveteen, it seemed a bit daft just to look like some other "geek" (no, the norms aren't nice to people who conform like them). Don't bother to conform, it doesn't allow you to get on any better, despite the impression the thought-police might want to give you. Go for it, bud!
