how do i get myself into these things?

Hello patient listener. Welcome to my bad hair day! hehe. Right now i've got about 5 inch hair that has a very slight curl under at the ends(kinda sticks out funny now). I finally decided to grow it long a few months ago. After reading some posts, i think i may be going about things the wrong way. Glad i found you guys! you wouldnt believe how many baldness pages i had to sort through to get here, ikk. anyway, tell me what to fix!
1) I shampoo and condition about once a week, i thought maybe the natural oil was good for my hair. every time i condition, it gets feeling really silky and hangs straight down in my face. with natural oil, i can push it out of the way and it stays better :)
2) I havent combed it since x-mas (except for fingers), but it isnt tangled- should i be combing? would it help the slight curl that has started?
3) Right now i wear it as it hangs in public(big university campus, pass a few thousand people a day- boy does that test my loyalty to my moptop hair sometimes...)- it hangs past my eyes, and i dont wear a cap. is there any way to style? i hate hats.
4) the only hairstyle that seems to work for keeping it out of my face is rubber band around the hair going straight up from my head so i look like a dr seus character(i only wear this at home!). is there an alternative? i would use gel but isnt it sort of defying the naturalistic beauty of long hair?
thanks a heap! - trout

Most people here will say that gel is fine for the transition period -- after it's long enough, you can go back to the natural beauty. If you don't like the helmet-inducing kind of gel, (I don't), there's plenty of stuff that does different things... I'm sure you can find something that will make your hair act the way you want.

Well....
I shampoo and condition every other day.... Sometimes every second day. If your going to shampoo more then that, make sure its not the cheap garbage.
Hair is healthier when its brushed regularly. It spreads the oil out. This will become more important the longer it gets..
And the transitional stage... M'eh.. its annoying, but it dosen't last long. Use either the gel, or just ride it out.
