: Nappy means nasty.
This is the definition I'm more familiar with- nasty, grungy, unkempt and dirty. (BTW, I'm from the SF Bay Area.)

In Australia and Britain it also means "diaper", though I assume it is not used in that context here!

The way a black persons hair grows, not freely out of the follicle in the way a causcasion or Asian persons grows. Not all black ppl have nappy hair. If you have any black friends or family, go ask them, because I'm as white as the webpage you're looking at :-), and I ,may be wrong.

"Nappy" is Black English for "kinky". Many whites have not heard the term. I first learned of it about two years ago, and the term has indeed worked its way into more general use as we move toward a multicultural society. The guy who named "Napster" after his own nickname was a white guy who got the nickname for having kinky hair.
The term is not new. My 1961 dictionary (Webster's Third New International) defines "nappy" thusly: KINKY, used esp. of Negroes' hair.
