Some growth and care questions

Some growth and care questions

I posted a message on here back at the beginning of January, where I stated that I was beginning to grow out my hair. I've trimmed up the edges a couple of times, and found that my hair appears to grow at a rate of about 3/4 of an inch each month. It is kind of wavy, and right now a little more than 2 1/2 inches (Jan 6 it was a little less than 3/4 inch) long when pulled straight. I wash my hair every day, but I have found that when I wash it, some of my hair gets frizzy and kinky (usually the top layer that is most exposed). By the time evening rolls around, it is mostly calmed down to it's natural shape (aka, not kinky). It also stays kinky after any time I wash it, if I do not put some type of leave in conditioner or gel in. Why is this, and what can I do to keep the kinkyness down? My scalp is usually kind of oily, so I need to wash it, but the hair is dry when I wash it too much. Also, I work out several times each week with judo and weights. Going without washing my hair would leave a residue of sweat and dirt on it, and that would damage the hair further, if I understand correctly. I'm sorry if this post seems a little long, but I just want to get all of the factors out. One more question: My hair seems like it is much, much thicker around the sides and back (someone threw a paper dart at me the other day, and it stuck in my hair), than it is on top. It's not really thin on top, but it doesn't seem as thick as the rest. Why is this, and is there anything to remedy this? Thanks for your replies.
