Knots

Knots

I have curly hair and not infrequently hair strands get tied in a knot all by themselves. I don't speak of two strands knotted together here (what we call a "tangle"), but rather of just single strands that end up with a knot within about an inch (2 to 3 cm) of the end. When I run my fingers through my hair, I feel a scratchiness when they pass over one of these knots. I also feel these knots can catch other strands and start tangles. So I have been removing them.

The only way to remove one of these knots is to cut the strand off, of course. I don't like doing this since the strand is perfectly healthy and I'm depriving it of the change to grow longer. Do any of you frequently get knots in your hair strands? If so, do you cut the strand at that point, or do you just leave the knot there?
