Question for BRGallagher

Hey BR:
Since you are a stylist I have a question. I'm trying to grow my hair all one length to my shoulders and yesterday when I went to my hairdresser she told me she has to take a few inches off the back so that the front will catch up. This was fine with me but now that she has cut the back it looks really short and I don't like it. Does the back have to be trimmed to catch up with the front? Does this mean when my front and sides reach my chin, the back will also have to be that length? Thanks in advance.
Carlos

Carlos, Sorry my advice didn't reach you before your hairdresser did. "she has to take a few inches off the back"??!! I don't think so. Assuming you are average, your hair is growing at only half an inch a month. My clientele is 100% men. With those who want to grow their hair out, I have them schedule appointments about every 8-10 weeks at which time I remove about an inch of growth (never more--and from the back ONLY with hair parted in the middle and combed straight down all around). Following that regimen, the front and sides are already below the chin when they finally catch up with the back. If this seems like a long-time process, it guarantees you never have a "really short" back that you don't like while keeping a balance with the sides/front. Hope your next trim appointment is a better one for you. It is your hair and we stylists are a service industry. And, as such, we need to listen to the client. After all, we hold your psyche in our hands--in just twenty minutes or less we can change how you feel about yourself: for better or for worse. That, to me, is an awesome responsibility. And I never take it lightly. (I am sorry that my industry at large doesn't feel the same way). Carlos, I invite you to check out my website and if I can be of further service, just ask.
