Awkward Stage

I've been growing my hair for 18 months now, and it's a bit below my chin in length. My hair is pretty straight. But i'm having a really annoying problem.... a lot of the time it curls up at the back! It's stupid because the rest of my hair is really straight, apart from the ends at the back, which flip up....
Sometimes it doesn't, but no matter how hard I try, it curls up. I know it's a minor thing, but it still s*cks.
Has anyone had this problem? and If so, does it go away with longer hair? any help would be very much appreciated!
Basically, I'm looking for some light at the end of the tunnel!!!

Yeah man, right now I'm at the EXACT same stage as you and having the EXACT same problem as you... at the bottom of the sides and back, it dips in then curles outwards. That's where the hair stops being one continuous shaft from the top of my head and individual ends are on the surface. You might find a TINY bit of salvation in extensively blowdrying that part downwards and combing it down fast with your fingers.... but comb it not only down, but also around your neck and over the shoulder, as to pull it straight. This hasn't worked too well for me however, as it stays straight for maybe half an hour and then begins curling outward again. Right now, I'm basically hoping that it grows fast enough to weigh itself down as soon as possible. I really don't wanna start using a straightening iron or something wacky like that. And I REALLY don't want to start using any sort of gel/goop/spray/crap. If you find something that helps, lemme know.

Good to hear someone going through the same problems.
I actually do blowdry it, and put a HEAP of effort on the back. usually I can get it looking ok, but I know as soon as I leave my house, the wind is just waiting to blow it everywhere, and yes, It starts to curl up again...It's got a mind of it's own! sometimes it stays straight, other times it curls up. What gives?!?! Why JUST the back?!?
I actually have just enough hair to get a pony tail happening, although It won't dangle so well, it will at least be a temporary solution to the annoying problem that is the awkward stage! Perhaps you can try that too? Mines all the same length, so I can tie it all back. Once it's heavy enough to weigh down, it will be all good, and I hope the journey is worth the wait! (and the trouble)
I think it's worth staying away from Gel and all that stuff...

I'm going through the same thing. If you take your fingers and sort of bend it the opposite way that it curls, it might help. I only use a little water or mousse when I do it. You never want to use a lot of any product (especially gel) cuz it'll really flip up, and then you're screwed.

same for me too lads,
trying to grow mine longer and it keeps curling at the back outwards and upwards and it gets on my t***. I find that it seems to be taking ages for it to grow and weigh itself down at the back but i reckon it will soon (I hope!). The hair curler and blow drying idea sounds good, I'll give it a try, cheers,

I've found that if you put in a couple of the larger velcro rollers as it's drying after a shower, the problem goes away. Actually looks pretty neat. Of course, it *does* help avoid snide comments from family members if you can go off alone and read a book or something for the two or three hours it takes to dry :).

Haha, I didn't think of that, it sounds like a good solution, basically. As for the time it takes, though, can't you just blowdry it?? Or will not "set in" as hard?

I've done some blow drying, and it seems ok. From what I've read, thing is just to stop before the hair is totally dry. You don't want to 'heat-treat' hair; it doesn't do well. My (limited) experience seems to show that any reasonable amount of time will counterract that 'splayed-out' phenomenon. And G*D, do I hate that look! I'm really looking forward to the day the hair will hold itself down!

AC-
It occurred to me- does not have to set in 'hard'. An hour or so of normal drying, or 15 minutes or so after partial blow drying, seems to work fine. All we're trying to do here is to make it curl in a bit, as opposed to curling *out*. I tend to try to let it air dry all the way- but sometimes I've had to accelerate the process! Good luck! Let me know how it works for you.

Just hang in there, it will start behaving itself soon enough. Maybe you can try some gel in the meantime. Remember, it is harder for guys. We have to go through the awkward stage while we are active members of society. Most women went through it when they were two years old!
