Water wash & oil buildup

Hello. I'm at the awkward stage now where my bangs touch the tip of my nose. I have thin/light weight hair-I've found that washing it in cool water daily and shampooing like twice a week makes my hair heavier cuz my scalp oil doesn't wash away.
I've been worried about balding, though, cuz balding runs in my family. So, I've been wondering if this kind of washing will help contribute to oil buildup if I don't use hair care stuffs (gel, hairspray, etc.). A good site for this is

They talk about massaging your scalp for a couple minutes while shampooing to increase blood circulation there. Does anybody do this and if so, can it be done with only water?
