Help with thick wavy hair!!

I have always kept my hair very short. It used to be buzzed off everywhere. But I have always wanted to have long hair. So last summer I decided to let it start growing. I let it grow for about 3 months without getting a hair cut and I saw that I had thick wavy hair. Every night when I washed my hair when it dried my bangs would be all curly and so would the back. So before school started back I had to get it cut a little bit because it was just wild. She mainly just thinned out the top and trimmed the sides. I thold her to leave the back lenghth alone. But my bangs and stuff would still curl after a shower. So one day I decided to put on a hat right after getting a shower while my hair was wet. I left it on till my hair was dry and then took it off. At first it looked stupid but after sleeping on it my bangs would stay straight with just a little bit of curl. The top was still wavy but that is ok. The only trouble is the back lenghth. It curls up!!! I have been letting it grow for about a year although my mom makes me get my bangs and sides trimmed every two months about. Also the woman that cuts my hair is my cousin. And she doesn't like long hair on men and she actually cuts some of the back everytime even though I tell her not to. I actually want my hair to be wavy when it is long but it is taking it twice as long to grow than straight hair plus I have to get it trimmed once and a while. I was planning on waiting till the back got long till I let the top and sides get long. I'm not one really for the ponytail I want to have the dark look with it all in my face. My hair is brown now but it will probably turn black as I get older (I'm 14 now) My older brother's hair was brown till he was about 16 or 17 it turned black. Plus my hair everywhere else is black. My dad used to have long hair when he was younger (between 16 and 20 something) I have seen pictures of his hair when he was growing it out and it was super wavy like mine. In the pic his bangs would probably reach down to his mouth if it was straight instead it slowly curled fown to his eyes then nearly did a whole loop. People are always telling me to get it cut at school but I think they all look stupid with their short buzzed off hair. I hated the way mine looked short. Hopefully somebody can give me some pointers on maybe keeping it somewhat straight. PLEASE!!!!!!

Oops! 'the woman that cuts my hair is my cousin. And she doesn't like long hair on men and she actually cuts some of the back everytime even though I tell her not to.'
If you want to grow your hair, one of the first rules is that you should NEVER EVER let someone who does not like your hair cut it! That is a guaranteed recipe for disaster. Also, the more often you trim your hair, the longer it will take to get through the awkward stage. Which is the stage most objected to by others.
As far as controlling the curls, I know that some will disagree with me, but I have found that gel has made the difference between hair that I can go out of the house with and hair that won't fit through the door. I use Citri Shine which contains no alcohol.
Good luck

Thanks for the help. I have just now started to experiment with gel. I got the strongest stuff i could find. It keeps it straight somewhat. I don't want to have BIG hair though and I live in the North Carolina where it is very humid and sticky always. So that could be a problem. But thanks for the help!!!!!!
