Reversing a PERM??
Posted by Justin on June 07, 2001 at 23:32:22: Previous Next
I am black with relatively long hair for a man, around 5 inches, of course, i have very curly, thick, course hair. A few months back i decided to perm it to make it a bit more managable. That was the worse mistake of my life, my hair is now spikey, and unnaturally straight looking while still sticking straight up from my head. What i wanted to know is, are there ways to reverse a perm? I used PCJ No-Lye relaxer. I heard that by ashing your hair in beer or vinegar, you could remove a perm. Does anyone know if this actually works? if so, are there any side effects? ...what about a curly perm? are there any adverse effects of curly perming straight permed hair?
Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

You've described a recipe for a chemical haircut - and not of the
style variety. Yes, it's possible to reduce or otherwise modify
this - but EXPERTISE is REQUIRED. Even then, it's a risk -
this is the sort of thing my instructors in hair school used to
use as the "horrible example" - find someone GOOD (if you or your
Significant Other) either don't have someone you trust - you may
just want to try a beauty school and ask to talk to one of the
instructors.

It would appear that you need to get a short haircut, and let your hair go back natural, or you might try a curly perm on very small rods. If your hair is not damaged, it should take the curl and put you back close to where you want to be, and possibly even with a little improvement - if you hair is not already damaged beyond repair.

I am not African American, so I don't know how to style AA hair. I do, however, have curly dry hair that needs moisterizer to keep it managable. Perms tend to curl hair and I don't quite get the concept of perming curly hair. Most AA men with perms look like Al Sharpton or [HYAAAAAAy!] James Brown! The bad result would be Don King-oooh, Lookout!
I use a lot of "Black" cosmetics like Creme of Nature and TCB 'cause it works well with my curly hair. You probably need to see an AA female stylist who deals with (BWOCK!,BWOCK!) chicken-head AA girls who do all kind of funky stuff to their hair and then run to her to make their heads look good until the next time they screw up!

I suppose that you mean a perm to straighten hair as opposed to curling hair!
