Haircutting
Posted by MG on July 10, 2001 at 10:34:22:
I'm sort of new to this message board and I think it's great! Up
'till now I thought maybe that I was the only one who had long hair just simply because I liked long hair, much, MUCH more than short hair.
From reading some of these messages I guess I went against everybody's
advice, but I think I'm lucky. I have curly, frizzy hair and I hadn't
been near any kind of haircutter in 8 years but I was tired of the
short, curly, frizzy hair on the back of my neck under my ponytail and
on the sides of my head. In January I went to a haircutting place
(not a barber shop!) and very carefully explained to the beautician
what I wanted. I also sat so I could see the mirror at all times so
I could yell stop! if neccesary. She used a #1 clippers to cut the
hair on the back of my neck and then a 1" strip behind my ears and
along the sides of my head 1" above my ears. It actually came out real good. Now I look like a longhair instead of a frizz ball. I've
been back about every month (about 6 times) and she has always cut it exactly the same, without "accidently" cutting some of the long hairs each time. I was very nervous the first few times hearing those clippers on my head! But compared to some of the other stories here
I must be lucky. I still have all my long hair and the frizzy fringes are gone. Again, I really enjoy visiting this board.
PS to jin. I would love to have hair like yours! I have seen your
pics and if you can keep growing it you should have excellent waist
length hair! And on one who is intelligent, no less.
Thanks MG

I did the same thing, sorta. I have thick curly hair which tends to get real frizzy, espeacialy in the summers we have in South Carolina. I also tend to Headbang and Mosh at live Metal shows. I went to a club and caught a live local metal band, rare for the home town of Hootie and the Blowfish. I was one of the few "old school" Heavy Metal dudes in the house. Most young Hard Rock fans look the same as white kids who are into Hip Hop. This is NOT to be deraugatory, it's just the fact. Anyway I was a 32-year-old going on 17....Just fine with me. After a night of being a big thrashing Hairball out of an 80's Iron Maiden show, I had damn near dreadlocks and had to use half a bottle of 99-cent elcheapo conditioner just to work the tangles out.
I reacently cut the hair off of my ears and flat on top. Not quite a mullet, more like a Marine in front with a 3/4-of-the-way-down-my-back braid. Really easy to comb through now. The amount of hair that I've left long is as thick as many heads of Long-all-over hair. If mine was long all over, I'd never get a comb through it. Plus I look younger, often mistaken for 24 or so. With both ears pierced and a goatee, I look like a new era rocker rather than what some kids percieve as a "heavy metal dinasaur", this is good because I attract more guitar and bass students, too. Cutting part of your hair for some men is like the way hunters thin the heards. The surviving parts fare better than if more were kept around. In my case and yours I'd guess, less to tangle, easier to groom,etc...The only differance is that I do not go to any type of stylist. I do my own whitewall and neck cleanup with my Mach 3 when I do my face. Just pull the length out of the way and let the hand that holds the razor feel ahead with the fingertips. I have never lost a long strand doing this because I take my time and start each stroke at the edge of the long part and shave AWAY. DO NOT stroke towards the length. sooner or later you'll develop a "grain" just like a facial "grain". This works very well with a lot of conditioner in your hair. Try useing a lot of real cheap conditioner to detangle and then a sparing amount of some quality stuff to moisten. I buy 99-cent sauve 3 times a week and Tresseme' once a month.

I don't know if I wuold have the nerve to cut as much hair as you
did but I'm glad you like your 'do and still have some long hair.
Have you seen those kids that have like Mowhocs with the hair that's
left long pulled back in a pony? Mine's kind of like that only
it's a very wide Mohoc. I like the feel now and then of my hair
hanging down across my face. Like you I bought some clippers to
do it myself but I screwed up and it's taken 8 months for that
piece of hair to reach my pony tie again.
Yes I use two conditioners also.
I guess I'll keep going to the stylist (she doesn't charge full
price since it's not a "whole" haircut), but if they ever mess up
(I always watch what they do, I'm not going to sit there and let
her cut any long hair) I'll try doing it myself again, cutting
AWAY from the long part. It takes too damn long for mistakes
to grow back.

Thanks a lot, MG! I can't wait to have hair brushing my waist ;)
BTW, you said you "hadn't been near to any kind haircutter in 8 years", does it mean you currently have very long hair, like our Boardmaster's?
Would very much like to see your pics :))

Thank you for noticing my message. I kind of feel a special link
to you as I think we feel the same about hair. Also I think you
said in one of your messages that you are an engineering student.
I am a practicing engineer and I have yet to see a longhaired
engineer around here. There cannot be many.
My hair is not as long as I would like it. Because it is curly
and seems to break easy I think I reached my "terminal" length
at about 2 feet. But I wasn't taking good care of it as far as
good combs, conditioners and proper pony ties. As one longhair
amongst many shorthairs I had no one to ask. The stylist I go
to now clued me in to conditioners etc. so I have gained about
3 inches since then and hope to keep growing. This is why I
would love to have hair like yours (OK, I'm jealous!).
I'm new to this board (love it!) so I haven't seen any pics of
the Boardmaster. Of the pics I have seen, Jarkko has great updos,
Sergey has awesome hair, and jin has the potential to be more
awesome than Sergey. I don't think you would find my pics very
interesting. Hmmm...I don't think I have any pics that just focus
on my hair yet.
Again, thanks for answering jin and keep growing!

Wow!! Nice to know that there's a long-haired engineer out there :))
Yes, you're right. I think that it could be due to the nature of our job. BTW, what's your specialization?

2 feet, yeah. that's my next goal!

Good for you, keep it growing and I'm sure you'll have beautiful long hair in no time.

You can have it too ;)

I guess I'm too flattered :> But no, I don't think I've got the chance to grow it that long :<
Nice having you as a new member on this board and happy hair growing!!
Cheers,
Jin

I am a civil engineer who specializes in housing developments,
drainage, vineyard roads and reservoirs, and structural engineering
of wooden structures up to 3 stories, and bridges.

I hope so. I would love to reach my dream (fantasy?) length of
3 feet. Maybe with the advice from this board and any other adice
you or the others may have I can.

Why? Do you think the military will make you cut it again? How
long are you subject to the military?

I'm also a structural engineer, currently doing my post-graduate course. What coincidence!!

I'm supposed to be subjected to military callup till 35 years old. Still got 9 years to go :(

I would enjoy very much the opportunity to be able to communicate
with you on various engineering problems (with the brain under the
hair, so to speak). But this would not be proper on this message
board. If I posted my email address would you be willing also?
I do not wish to intrude on anybody's privacy.
Thank you, MG
