kurt,
i used to have a tieback undercut. i loved it!! i think they look very good on some people, but not everyone. basiclly, just let your hair grow...and grow and grow. when it is around shoulder length, have your stylist buzz cut about an inch to an inch and a half in the back and over the ears.
good luck!

How long is your hair now? What sort of hair cut?

About 4 inches on top, side parted.

With 4 inches on top you could go ahead and undercut it right now, and youd have a bowl cut down to your ears, which you can braid or comb back or part in the middle or whatever. That would basically put an end to the "akward" stage if you consider yourself to be in it now. A couple more inches growth on top and you could tieback everything but your bangs and just have lose bangs, or you can wait and tie it all back. If your back and sides are kind of unruly you probably should go ahead and undercut it soon, there would be a lot less hair to deal with and it would be nice and cool for the summer. Plus, you if wear a hat people won't even notice you have long hair on top. If you don't think you'd like the look of relatively short hair on top with an undercut, and you don't wanna wear a hat, just let it go for awhile till you can tie back the whole top. In a few months your top hair will be below you ears and you'll be well on your way to being a longhair. Good luck man!
