Growing hair long. This may help

When i used to want to grow my hair long I'd go from short hair to the idea of having hair to my shoulders in 1 step. After 6-7 months my hair would be so sloppy looking that i'd give up and get it short again. I noticed that many other dudes do the same thing. Here is what I've done since January and i'm happier with the results.
I had a short ceasar cut to start with buzzed on the sides. I found a pic of a dude with a grown out caesar cut, longer in front, sides and back. longer than buzzed but not long.
when that started growing out i found a pic in international male of a guy with hair longer in the back, cut over the ears and more grown out in the front.
A few months later i brought in a pic of that european cut: over the ears but longer in back and in front of the ears and fuller on top and front.
I just had my hair cut to look like this website stud:

now i'm letting it grow over the ears and fuller all over.
In a few months I'll either find a pic of a still longer style, keep it like this or take a step back.
I call this controlled growth and am happy because each hairstyle has been stylish. I do not want hair that looks hippyish or redneck, just sexy and long. I'd be really happy to get it like Kevin Sorbo's Hercules when he first started and it was really full.
I hope that this will help others that are giving up because of the sloppiness of growing long hair
