What's the best way to dry longer hair?

Like the subject line says, I'd like to have some of your "expert" opinions on how to dry longer hair. My technique from short hair days may no longer be a good idea: I just rub a towel vigorously all over my head and then comb it out. I have average-thickness, wavy brown hair (now about 5" long), and after drying it this way it gets curly and kind of tangled (I do use conditioner) but I'm still able to comb it out without many snags... however it no longer really gets dry this way. If I use a blow dryer it gets too fluffy and Bozo-ish. If I leave it wet then I don't feel "presentable" and it eventually gets frizzy (I live in a dry climate). Any suggestions for techniques that are not damaging or very time-consuming? Thanks in advance.

To minimize tangles, wash your hair down. Do not pile it up on your head. Then when drying, just pat the towel to press as much water out as possible. As your hair gets longer you can gather it in front of your shoulder and squeeze the towel around it with both hands. I find that a large tooth detangler comb works well to start. Always start down at the ends and gradually work your way up. Comb in some gel if you need it, then style and let it dry. Sorry, but this does take time, and the drying process takes time also. There is really no way around that unless you want to use the blow dryer.
