I've read that when you have long hair you should use a satin pillow when you go to sleep. Why is this? And does it work?

Yes, satin pillows known to be so smooth that it allows hair to slide freely on it while you're tossing and turning during sleeping. Unlike ordinary cotton/canvas/clothed pillows, where the material fibres actually clings on to your hair.
I personally haven't tried sleeping on satin pillows (btw, they're costly too) and could not do a fair comparison. But I know that my present 100% cotton pillow have served me (and my hair) well :).

They are absolutely gorguous as I have much less tangle in the morning when I woke up - plus I adore its smootness.
