Starting to grow long hair... But how?

Hi!
My name is Néstor and I'm 16 years old.
Well, I have always liked long hair, but, as my parents don't, I have never dared to let mine grow. But now I think I have already had enough and I have decided to let it grow, though I haven't told them about it yet -jejeje-... Well, I'm red-haired and I have (beautiful)straight hair, so I think it would look great a bit longer. I would like to let it grow up to the ankles or so, but I have no information about how many time this would take me, how I should take care of it until it reaches this length... You see, about anything. So I would really like you to tell me your experiencies with hair and even to send me some pictures of yours or of other really long haired men you may have seen.
Well, I hope to hear from you soon. Bye!!!

Hi and welcome! It is nice to know that there's another potential male longhair on this planet. Try to scroll down the threads and archives on long hair care, there are tons of information on this board.
Also, set realistic targets for yourself. Set milestones along the way instead of fixing an ultimate aim. If you do the former, you'll less likely to be giving up halfway.
There are some pics of Mike and me :) down below. Alternatively, you could also refer to the gallery section or the longest hair samsons section on this site.
Best wishes and happy hair growing.

Hi, Nestor. My advice to you is to keep growing it and don't cut it. I know that sounds obvious, but I think many people get it trimmed and lose valuable growth. If you think it needs a trim for one reason or another wait at least 6 months or more and see if you still think so (the awkward stage is so fun... NOT!). They say it grows about 6 inches a year, on average, so that'll give you a rough idea how long it'll take. I'm 18 and have been growing it for 4 years, but I'll say for certain that the last year has been the most enjoyable (further from the awkward stage, I guess). I should point out that I wear mine in a tied-back undercut, with everything below the tops of my ears buzzed. I know its not everyone's favorite style but it works for me and it stays really neat.
Good luck to you and your long-hair plans!

It's nice to know that there are others who have tied-back undercuts
that work. By any chance is your hair thick and wavy?
