hey guys... I'm wondering whether you've noticed a big amount of hair loss(50-60) especially during combing after shampooing your hair.
is it ok not to comb your hair at all?? mine is 7-8" long, curly and it's very difficult for a comb (even a wide-tooth) to go throu.
any advice????
thanx

Hey dude, take care of that shampooing. You might be breaking your hair shaft unwittingly during that process. Remember, shampoo your hair as if it you're washing a piece of expensive, fine silk.

Sometimes I think we ought to ask Victor to put this in big type at the top of this web board: "It is normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs a day. 50 to 100 long hairs make a bigger mass than 50 to 100 short ones. You are not going bald by becoming a longhair." ((grin))
Yeah, we get asked that a lot here, but we realize this place is a revolving door - people find out what they need and move on - so we're cool with being asked.

If you don't comb curly hair at all, it will become matted into knots that you can never remove. When this happens in an orderly fashion in the circular way that curly hair mats, we call that dredlocks. In any event, when you decide you don't want the matted hair, the only way to remove it is to chop it all off. You will not be a longhair after that, so consider going down that path a one way street.
You will need a wide-tooth comb, and one with long teeth. I use an afro pick, and it works well. Start at the ends of your hair and once they are free of tangles, move your comb upward and comb down through another two to three inches until it is detangled. Also, do not try to take on all your hair in one fell swoop. Detangle a top layer and then move to layers underneath. Remember, each layer should be tackled first from its ends.
It is widely said that you should not brush or comb wet hair. This is so for straight hair because wet hair is weaker and more prone to damage, but some curly hair is less slick and without a lubricant of some kind, it will be more damaged combing it dry. (And forget brushing it altogether.) It will fight back dry combing so much you'll break it if you insist.
You can put a conditioner on it, or you can get your scalp just wet enough to loosen the natural oil on it without washing it away. As that water seeps down with the natural oil, this will lubricate the hair much better than plain water, which is what you'll have if you put lots of hot water on your head. When you comb hold the comb very loosely in your fingers. If your hair stops the comb, do not force it. Find where the catch is, and loosen it gently. Then proceed.
Expect to spend several minutes on this each morning. It takes me ten or fifteen. If you skip a day, you'll find you have more work. Don't skip too many, or you'll start getting tangles you can only remove by cutting out!
Curls are awesome. Enjoy yours!
