Okay, first off, I AM a stereotype...I'm 18 years old and i play guitar. As i look through history i see that the greatest guitarists have all had long hair in the beginning - Page, Clapton, Allman, Van Halen, Hetfield/Hammett, Rhoads, etc. - so naturally i wanna grow my hair out.
Now it should be said that i've always had my hair kinda long (about 4 inches). I know that isn't THAT long, but when compared to a buzzcut...
My question is very, very broad, ...How should i cut it so it doesn't look completely stupid until it grows out all the way?
Are there certain steps to follow or is it just going to look weird until it's long enough?
Thanks,
FretSpyder

You guessed correctly its going to look weird for awhile. I'd advise against cutting it at this time - wait as long as you possibly can before trying to trim it to "shape" it or whatever. You're entering the awkward stage, where its unmanageable and looks messy. Be patient! The longer it grows beyond shoulder length the easier it is to manage (in my opinion), and the better it looks!

If you currently have some spilt ends, then getting those trimmed out now wouldn't do any harm, otherwise the trick is just to keep away from scissors! You MIGHT be lucky and maybe your hair will look OK while growing it out, but the chances are that you'll just have to live with the awkward stage just like the rest of us! :-)
Good luck
