If i were you i wouldn't do it. I know how annoying those flip ups can be, but if you trim your hair on the back the only thing you'll achive is prolonging that stage, and the hair will flip up no mmatter if you trim it or not. In fact, the longer it is, the easiest it will be to control it.

Thanks for all the advice. I trimmed the back and i sort of have a bob, but not quite, it is ok. From here I don't plan on cutting or trimming it for a very long time

If you trim it, the flip ups will probably not get any better. Let it grow a little more and the weight of the extra hair should eventually kill off the flip ups.

if a men's (exclusively) stylist can offer some advice...
your "flip" might just be a "styling" problem easily solved without trimming: try turning the ends under (reverse the flip) with a wide-toothed comb or vent brush while your hair is damp, then spritz the area LIGHTLY with a non-aerosol hair spray. Let dry and then comb out. This action should be enough to "set" your hair WITHOUT it looking like any product is on it when it dries.
if there is still a problem, trimming DONE CORRECTLY is the answer BUT you should have professional help from a professional you can trust IMPLICITLY to follow (your) directions EXACTLY. If you have found such a person, proceed...
your hair should be wet and all combed back. Then leaving a 2-inch horizontal section at the nape of the neck, the rest of the hair should be moved out of the way. The section is then combed down and cut evenly across--taking off AT THE MOST only half-an-inch. Then another two-inch section is dropped down and the process repeated--cutting only what falls below the first section. This process is continued until there is only an even edge all across the back. If done correctly, the outer hair is just a bit longer than the hair next to the neck producing a turned-under effect at the edge--rather than the flip-up.
incidentally, this procedure can be applied to any length hair (shoulder-length, middle-of-the-back, whatever) to produce an even edge to the hair--if that is what you like (I know from other posts on this site that an "au natural" look is preferred by some).
Hope this works for you. If you have any further questions or difficulties, contact me directly through our website (www.brgallagher.com). Always willing to help. Good luck!
