Hair loss

I'm 16 and I've been growing out my hair since I was 13. Right now its down to about my elbows. The big problem now is that I haven't trimmed it in almost 3 years. I never realized how brittle my hair would get if I never trimmed it, but now lots of hair is falling out, and if I run my fingers through I usually get a couple strands of hair with it. My hairline is receding slightly, and overall its getting thinner. I was wondering if I started to trim the ends now, would it strengthen my hair? And if I did, how far up would I have to cut? Also, are there any other ways to strengthen my hair to prevent so much from falling out? Thanks

: All the authorative sources I've consulted state that it's perfectly normal for 40 to 100 hairs to fall out daily. It sounds like a lot, but don't worry, they grow back.
As for nutrition, eat a balanced diet, get plenty of protein, take vitamin supplements and keep the junk food to a minimum.
As for the dryness, try different conditioners, Sebastian has a good line of products.
Happy growing.

Trimming does not strengthen hair. Taking care of it does. That means a good balanced diet, regular excercise and plenty of rest. Also, try to keep your hair out of the wind and sun. And don't wash it too often as that strips out the natural oils. The root of your hair, where the growth actually occurs, has no idea what is happening out at the ends or how far away they are.

I could never understand this one. Why would trimming the end of your hair strenghten the hair that is already out of the folicule or the hair that is still to come out? DO you think your hair folicule will know that you trimmed the end of a strand of hair? Guess what, hair is dead, and the hair folicule doesn't really care if you trim, cut or leave it alone.
Like the other guys said, you have to take really good care of it in order to maintain it in good shape.
