There are several messages on the board treating about the infamous awkward stage. Among them, lots complies about puffy or very dry hair.
It'is just a signal : you have to change your hair's routine. Stop shampoo every day, use conditioner, and say good bye to crazy hair :-)
When your hair is short, the daily production of natural oil in the scalp is sufficient, so you can shampoo everay day.
The longer your hair become, the more oil you need. And every time you shammpoo, you remove oil (and also dirt, luckily). Conditionner helps to restore a good balance of moisture in your hair.
And the time you win by not shampoo can be spent in brush your hair : it helps to distribute the natural oil towards the ends of your hair.

I've tried a dozen routines - it's still messy! But I agree with you, a good routine makes matters better (if not perfect) and you are right about shampoo making matters worse.
