breaking hair

ive got long hair but want it longer what happens is the hair seems to grow when it wants like i might get some growth shown like once a year but i know it grows cause i can see the roots because i coulour it but only seems to really keep the new growth now and again will this be because its breaking off or something?
and what will be the best thing for me to do

Maybe the hair color is damaging you hair. Trying a different hair color product or discontinuing the use of hair color products may help.
