Problems with thin hair....

I have a problem... I tried growing my hair out before and it turned into a nightmare. I have really thin hair and I found that I couldn't keep up with managing it. It completely went to crap and I got split ends all the time. What is the best way to keep this from happening so it doens't look like shit? Another problem I had is that once my hair got to a certain length, it just stopped growing... why is that? what can I do to fix that problem?

You sound like you are discribing the awkward phase. Hang in there. Long hair dosen't happen in a year. It takes several years for hair to be managable when long. Let time happen. I know 3-4 years sounds like a long time, and it is, but if you want managable long hair, you MUST let it grow and leave the cutting to your toe nails.
Two possibilities

When there are a lot of split ends, the hair just breaks off at the ends, making it appear that the hair is no longer growing. It is possible that the hair is still growing from the root, yet any new growth is not apparent, because the hair at the end of the strand is breaking off.
There is also the possibilty that your hair has a short terminal length span. There are some people who can only grow hair so long, then it stops growing, and eventually the hair falls out to be replaced.
I don't know you or your hair, but I suspect that one of these reasons is the culprit in your difficulty to grow long hair.
