Advice for very thick hair.

I've been growing my hair out for around 4 months. All my life my hair has been full of body. The problem is that causes extremely big hair. Although my hair is straight, it does not fall downward... yet. I'm hoping that eventually it will fall downwards because of the weight of the hair, however, do you suppose there is the possibility that I will always have hair that has remains large and unmanageable, or would it all cascade downwards in a number of months?
Do you think it would look good to have extremely thick hair shoulder length and beyond (hair that would fall widely across the shoulders) or should I get an undercut and let the rest on the top grow out evenly, so it doesn't appear so "big and wide"?

Yes, it will look great!!! Just be patient. It will look awesome falling wildly across the shoulders (I know since mine does!) And it will eventually fall downwards too! That's when you'll really enjoy having long hair. Good luck.

Kurt, I have to echo John's advice!
With "thick and wide" long hair, you'll have many different ways to wear it. A few examples: loose; one big braid; center part pulled back in a "topknot" ponytail; braids on each side; mid-head barrette with the rest loose; neck-level barrette and a loose band lower down.
I also think that thick long hair looks great backing longer dangly earrings or larger hoops, if you have any interest in trying out earrings.

Kurt,
I too have been growing my hair out, now it's been 4+ months.
My hair is thick and wavy. My advice - do not cut any hair. Some years ago I had my hair half way down my back. It was very thick and wavy, about the same as what I expect it will be again. The only difference is that I was in my 20's then, now I am 50. It is never too late to grow hair back long again.
Stick with it man, you will look great, I know - I used too, and will again.

Kurt: I agree. My hair is somewhat full and just about 5 inches long and growing. My hair has been growing at a little over an inch per month.
I am taking hair growth vitamins by Good & Natural. Comes in a bottle of 60 for $4.81. The name on the bottle is "SKIN, HAIR AND NAILS FORMULA" these vitamins really do work. Just recently I visited a hair salon - no hair cutting - I asked them to evaluate the health of my hair, after 4 months of taking these vitamins, I am 50 years old and both my older brothers are going bald, NOT ME, I was told that I have very healthy hair, and the hair consultant said that most people would kill for my kind of hair.
Do not cut your hair. A little over 20 years ago, I had my hair long - half way down my back - it was full, wavy and beautiful. I got married, changed jobs, got a hair cut. Now I am separated, going for a divorce, changed my job to a job that allows long hair, and I have been growing it for over four months. There is no limit as to what length I am growing it, until nature stops it. I speak from many previous years of advice - over 10 years that I had long hair then.
DO NOT LET ANYTHING GET IN YOUR WAY, DO NOT GET YOUR HAIR CUT, IF YOUR MARRIED OR GET MARRIED, AND YOUR PARTNER WANTS YOU TO GET A HAIR
CUT, TELL THAT PERSON - NOW IS THE TIME FOR US TO PART WAYS - DIVORCE.
TAKE CARE, BE COOL DUDE,
MIKE

I don't know much about men's hair, but I friend of mine is growing his back out, and it's very thick and a bit wavy. He had it in a ponytail when I saw him last and I noticed it was shaved a tiny bit underneath, at the nape of his neck and I thought, "What the hell?". When he took it down later, however, it was absolutely gorgeous. It's just barely past his shoulders and it hung so nicely. (From the back of his head, he looks just like Dave Mustaine.) This may not work for everybody, I'm sure, but his was very nice.

I have been growing my thick, wavy, locks for over a year. Yes, thick and unruly is a problem but the longer it gets the nicer it is. For society I wear it in a ponytail with a little gel and leave in conditioner. It works fine and lays down. When I am at home I wear it 'au naturel' and what a head of hair........ I am just about 50 years old and i cant wait for my head of hair to reach down my back. When I brush it , I think of those bald headed idiots that are half my age and envy my lovely locks!! Best thing I ever did, and I come to this board to remind myself that I am growing my hair for MYSELF. So, excuse my bad language, but FUCK EM if they dont like your hair. Tis you and tis but one life to lead......enjoy!!!!!

Kurt,
I do not have anything to offer. I can tell you my experience. My hair is also straight and full of body and will not lay down. I always wanted long hair but did not try for different reasons including job. I started to grow it in the 90's and got the result you describe. It just kept growing out. I used a lot of jell to help. I decided to adopt the still fairly common style still popular at the time from the 80's of short top and sides with the long back. However, my hair never had the nice soft flowing look. I decided to just cut it off and go to a buzz cut. I have long sideburns, a goatee and I have a spikey top which sticks up on its own. I put gel in it to make it look better. It will not lay down. If I swim, it still sticks up. I realized that the long hair did not seem to work for me. I have had my hair short for years now. I will say that when I see long hair I do still think about it. I never tried a perm. Someone said that might break down the body of my hair. It seemed to me that a perm adds more volume. I never did go past the ackward stage. I think if you are already at the ackward stage you should consider continueing. Maybe when its all shoulder length it will look good.
