I'm growing my hair out, should I be trimming (actually shaving) the hair on the back of my neck?

rob,
that all depends on which neck hairs you are talking about. i have neck hairs that grow rather far down my neck and into the bottom of my neck/top of my back. so YES, i shave those. you might be asking about an undercut. shaving this is optional. some like it. some do not. personally, i like it. i think it cleans the overall neckline up and keeps things neat and tidy when your hair is tied back. just be careful with an undercut. don't get it cut too high.

I agree with mjtoo. That's the way I like mine.

Depends. Most guys who wear full ponytails do keep the neck hairs
trimmed. I never wear a full ponytail, I just wear a "1/8 ponytail" (whatever that's really called) where I tie back only the hair that gets in my face. This way I have the look and feel of wearing it loose, yet keep it outta my face! So I don't need to trim the neck hairs.
So it depends on how you wanna wear your hair!

yeah i was just talking about cutting the hairs that kind of extend to my upper back a bit, no undercut. When I had short hair they did not trim the back straight across (this is hard to explain)I'm sure when you see people with short hair from the back you can see that the back/bottom of the hair is not always cut straight across but sometimes given a rounded shape... thats what i have, should i let it grow like that or get it cut straight across (sorry if this is confusing)

I do not want the hair on my neck cut. It is the first step to a mullett, and that is dangerous. Sooner or later the shaved and trimmed area creeps up, and then do you have a mess.
For some people there is a location low on the neck that clippers may be appropriate, but for some people hair on the shoulders is so thick that trimming would be lick mowing a swath thru the lawn.
My hair is medium brown. I bleach the hair on my neck and the lowest 1/2 inch of hair very blond, and it mostly disappears except for a provocative blond tip at the bottom. I also bleach the hair on my arms for a good suntanned look.
