1st day tied back

Hello all, Ive been a regular visitor to this board, but not posted before.
I have been growing for about a year now, and I am enjoying the progress that I am making. Today I tied my hair back for the first time, and I find it brilliant not having it all in my face all the time now. Still the very front of the bangs are loose but i guess gel or moose can sort that out.
Just one quick question though, about split ends, are the little hairs that stick up from my head classed as split ends or just new hair that is regrowing? I have heard different things in different places.
Thanks in advance

Congratulations on getting your first tail!

Some men are successful at tucking those hairs in underneath others that do reach their hair tie. You might give that a try. Or yes, just gel them down.

No, those aren't split ends! Split ends come from hair that is so long (i.e., so old) it has worn out, generally due to harsh treatment. What you're speaking of are your newest hair strands, the young ones which will be your long ones after your present long ones have lived their life span and fallen out. Those "little ones" will always be a problem no matter how long your hair grows. Since you can't afford to cut them off because of their importance for your mane's future, all you can do is either get them to be held down by the longer hairs among them, or apply water or a gel to help them do that.
What a lot of us find is those hairs work their way out during the day, and rather quickly if you're out in the wind. The thing to do is realize long hair has to be neatened up once in a while and just do it. Check your hair each time you go to the men's room during the day. People indoors expect hair to be neater than when you're outside and outside is where these hairs particularly get liberated, so make it a habit to run by the men's room on your way inside and tidy up your mane. It just takes a moment.
