Want to grow hair long, but it's thick

I'm 18 and my entire life, I've had relatively short hair because it's what boys have I was always told. Plus I played baseball so it was to be expected. Plus I have extremely thick hair. My mother has thick hair for a woman and my dad has curls. My hair is thick, kinda of wavy and right now it's about medium length and curls at the ends of my hair. My dream is to grow it real long to the point where I could put it in a ponytail. I would love to have my hair flowing nice and long like tennis player Patrick Rafter's did,but I"ll probably have to settle for the look that Creed's singer, Scott Stapp has. But even to get that, I think I might have to thin my hair every 3 or 4 months while growing it out just so that my hair can actually move when I shake my head. The barber I go to said for me to trim it every 6-8 weeks(very little trim) in order to keep it healthy and that I should thin it every 3 to 4 months. That sounds great to have thinner hair, but won't it look bad if for the most part, I have long hair strands but I also have ones that are very short or will it be very unnoticeable. I'm new to this long hair thing so what do u'll recommend for a thick and I mean thick(when I wake up in the morning my hair sort of fros up so I immediately wet it down in the bathroom) headed youngster like myself. Any shampoo, conditioner, combing strategies you have for me. Oh yeah after I take a shower, should I comb my hair, because all though it appears to be at its thinnest, is it good for my hair? Thanks

Well, if you want to, you could get the sides and back trimmed just a bit to keep them neet every few months or so. This gives the hairs on top of your head time to catch up to the level of the rest. Of course, I don't know what kind of look you want; but that's what I've been doing since I started growing my hair out; and it works for me. Also, to help out your hair's thickness/bigness, do what many of the other posts on this board say and only shampoo once a week or so. You can condition whenever you want, but just don't overdo it. You'd be surprised how well your natural scalp oils will help the look of your hair. Hope this helps.
