Problems with knots

I dyed my hair about a year ago and have been letting it grow out ever since. The part of my hair that is still dyed is kinda dry and damaged. I've noticed that, especially after showering, there's an abundance of knots in dyed part of my hair. I thought that maybe since that part is damaged it is prone to knots because the natural colored part of my hair never gets knotted. I also thought I may need to work on my shower techniques so I'm left with less knots. Does anyone else have this same problem? If so, or even if not, is there anything you could suggest that would reduce the amount of knots in my hair after showering? I would really appreciate it. Thanx.
One word: Conditioner!

You might try brushing your hair before the shower too just to make sure the knots are out before you start.
Brushing will also reduce the amount of hair that's set free to clog up your drain.
