I've decided on a plan of action

Well after wondering what to do with my thick hair in my quest to grow my hair long, I've decided on a couple of things. Right now, my hair is relatively short. Only about 4 inches. But this thursday marks the 6 week period since my last trim so I will get just a little bit(extremely small)trimmed to keep my hair nice and healthy. I will do this every 6-8 weeks. Also, from reading lots and lots of advice, I've opted not to thin my hair. Hopefully, when longer, it'll be albe to move around the way I want and look good in either a ponytail or loose. I would love my hair to look like Scott Stapp's(the lead singer of Creed) and in a dream world(the old long hair of tennis player Patrick Rafter) but I guess I'll have to settle for what my thick hair will allow. I will venture over to GNC to pick up some hair vitamins in order to hopefully increase my hair's growth rate so it's more than 1/2 inch per month. Also, I will only shampoo my twice a week, but condition it on a regular basis so my hair is not as big and frizzy. What do you'll think of my plan? Any suggestions for changes?

A trim won't make your hair healthy or nice. It will make your hair shorter, period. The only reasen for a long hair (or a long hair wanabee) to have a hair cut is to remove hair split. But if you take good care, you won't have split until several years.
My hair is below shoulder length (two years of growth, no cut) and I have no split ends til now. I use only water to wash my hair (no shampoo), and only two times a week. I condition with monoi oil, before washing my hair (I let monoi rest a whole night generally).

He's only asking for guidance, dude, something most inexperienced people should do. Would you let a child learn how to ride a bike on its own without proper guidance? No. Same with haircare, people need to be taught the basics, THEN they can figure out their own plans.
By the way, Chris, your plan sounds good. The only problems are the trims, and how you'd like to look. Screw the trims, just take REAL GOOD care of your hair, then trim ONLY the split ends as soon as the hairs on the back of your head are long enough to be placed in front of your eyes. And don't focus on who you'd like to look like unless you're willing to spend tons of money in a salon. Hair is unpredicatable, and so is your future look. Peace.

All of your visible hair is dead. Trimming will no more make it healthy, than putting a stone in the water will make it swim. Trimming does only one thing to your hair, it makes it shorter. Oh, and on the subject of splits. If you take good care of your hair, then splits should never be a major problem. In fact, hairs that have never been cut, have naturally tapered ends that resist splitting quite well.
