DESPERATELY NEED HELP!!!

Yo-
my name is nathan and i am 16 years old. currently i live in japan and that is the reason i want to grow my hair out long. you see, all the guys in japan just shag their hair out and never really cut it. when they do get it cut, you can never tell. it is like they try to make it look unkept. in america (wisconsin to be exact) i always kept somewhat short hair, about 2 inches. i livein a really really small town where discrimination amongst long hair men is very high. for exmple we have a teacher at school (hes the best) who had his house vandalized because of his hair. but since im not in america anymore i decided to grow my hair out long because i stand out more with SHORT hair. my hair is blond (natural, i might add), very thick and wavy. right now it is about 3 and a half inches long and i have no idea exactly how to go about doing this. i have a friend from mexico who simply just stopped getting his hair cut and it seems to be working good for him. but like i said, my hair is thick and wavy and it is starting to develop an annoying bigness. i probably shouldnt be so self conscious about it but i just feel weird. so what i would like for any one of you kind folks to do is tell me what the best course of action is. also, can somebody tell me FROM EXPERIENCE, not from a website or a book, how fast hair grows per month. also, is there any type of vitamin or pill that i can take that ACTUALLY WORKS and accellerates hair growth?
thanks very much
nathan

Hair grows an average of about 1/2 inch each month. It'd be good idea to measure yours yourself to find out your own growth rate. If you really need the vitamins, the most popular are biotin, fo-ti (chinese herb in pill form), and hair formula 37 (can be bought online). It's pretty hard to compete with Japanese hairstyles, since they spend A LOT of time getting their hair just right. They don't like to go "natural." If you do want to fit right in though, just go get a japanese hair magazine and check out the local styles.
I'm warning you though, fads change quickly there, so just think twice before dishing out wads of cash for that next salon style.

Hey, 16 year-old guy in Thailand here. I started growing my hair when my hair was about 3 or 4 inches long and now it's about 9 or 10 inches long... What I can tell you is, there really isn't a way to speed up hair growth... When I started I didn't cut my hait at all, much like your mexican friend, it was EXTREMELY (yes, it was) annoying, and most of all, HIDEOUS (yes, it was) but now that it's long enough to tie into a ponytail (except some of the bangs, but they're long enough to go behind the ears) I am glad I didn't cut or trim it along the way, which would have slowed down the growth. Anyway, good luck and keep trying.
And I agree. I have lots of Japanese guys at school, and ones that have long hair DO like to have their hair look messy/puffy.
Love,
Kiat
PS: Like Dark Elf said, on average hair grows at 1/2 inch per month a year. Mine's a bit faster, I think (or I THINK I think.)
