Sports & Long Hair

Hi All
What should I be concerned with, being into distance running, and growing long hair? My hair gets very sweaty each day, so I find it almost necessary to wash it..
And, is there any preventive things I can do to help save my poor hair when on long runs?
Thank you kindly, this forum is great.

Women have been running with long hair for years... I should know I married a runner - we met on the track in college.

always feels good to me cuz it's a great way to cool off, and washes all the sweat out. I ran track in high school, and still run, but not competitively. I actually found my hair does best when it's a little oily when I excersize. Oil and water (sweat) don't mix, so the sweat washes out a little easier. Another good point is that extened time out in the sun will tend to make my hair brittle.

I've had long hair for years and when I would go out for
a run I tied it back in a poney tail and had no trouble with it.
If it was particularly windy I would use several poney tail ties.
(Don't use elastics.)
you need a good scrunchy:

I run 5 miles a day 3-7 times a week and my hair is 3 feet long, If I don't bun it up I end up with knots that don't quit, I have tried braiding and I find it flops around too much and is distracting to me and I don't like the feeling of it tucked down my shirt. Not only does being in a bun hold it nice and securely but it also prevents the sun from damaging it and the back of my neck does not get sweaty either. If you put it in with your hair slightly damp when you take it out you will have beautiful waves too, lotsa body. I had a very hard time finding scrunchies that would work for my hair but I found them on ebay a couple of years ago and they are out of this world. The lady that makes them has every color and lots of different fabrics and she will make them whatever size you want too. I have over 25 of her scrunchies now and they don't break- I won't buy another kind ever again, Monie's Ponies is the name of her store on ebay, she has an email link in her auctions if you want to contact her. Don't make the mistake of trying any others on there as I already have and they are not anywhere near the quality or size of hers, they may cost a bit more than others but they are worth every penny.
